Last week, The Buckhead Church (Peachtree and Wieuca Rd), had development plans approved to build 444,000 sqft of commercial space: a high-rise consisting of 300 residential flat units, a separate division of almost 40 townhome units, and a small group of single-family cottage homes. The project was planned to be developed around the church, keeping the church’s structure in the final plans and raising the current sanctuary’s roof height.
Shortly after these plans were approved, Mayor Bottoms issued a veto on the approval, stating that “While I believe we all agree that some future mixed-use development of this important property is appropriate and desirable, the density and intensity of this specific proposal, and the severe negative effects likely to result therefrom, warrant reconsideration of the City of Atlanta’s approval of the proposed rezoning of the property pursuant to this legislation.”
I feel that bringing high density housing as well as retail/office space to the area would be beneficial however, I can understand where Mayor Bottoms is coming from. Personally, 
I’d like to see plans with attention to the community green space in amended plans for the development. The Buckhead/Brookhaven area nearby certainly isn’t suffering from a lack of homes or retail spaces. I do feel like additional canopy and greenspace for people to enjoy would do everyone good.
