Lately if you’ve been driving around in town or outside the perimeter you’ve probably seen all the new Publix locations going up.
Many neighborhoods in Atlanta have historically been food deserts (and still are). With all these new stores coming in, I asked myself, “How do Publix and other major grocery retailers chose where to build?”. This may seem boring, but it’s a very complicated issue.
There are algorithms they use to determine their next locations, using demographics: population, age, access to transportation, etc, but it mostly comes down to average income in an area.
I am very passionate about reforming schools to include nutritional awareness programs for children to learn all about food: from growing, cooking, eating and health benefits. That is a place to start!
